Sign sizes are limited to square units. Units can be added horizontal or vertically to accommodate different amounts of content.

By simplifying the design, we cut the material cost of each sign in half and produce a sign that is a more consistent in its application.

Because we designed a system for the university as a whole rather than a single building, our guidelines needed a universal approach. Decisions on what signs to use in a building need to be guided by a simple decision making process.

The system provides two levels of way finding, the use of which is determined by viewing distance.

The final produce is a thorough guidelines document that guides UIC when making new signage.

The directory sign is designed to be easily updated when information changes. A base plate is attached to the wall, and square units are attached with security screws. When a name changes it is a simple process of replacing a single module. Avoiding directories with sections taped over or pulled off.

Wayfinding signage is constructed from routed and cut DiBond, which creates a dimensional but visually light sign. The hollow form allows the signs to be hung from the ceiling or mounted projecting from the wall.

The signage template is deliberately simple. Using only 7 template files, UIC is able to create a sign for any situation on campus.
